Classics for beginners

Updated: Jul 6, 2022

Whether you're a book reader or not, we all get the random urge to read a classic book every now and then. But let's be honest, comprehending classics is 10x more difficult than comprehending a y/a fantasy...

Reading, understanding and enjoying classics is indeed a tough ladder to climb, but once you climb it, it's hard to come back down!

Today, I've made a list of some well known classics, which are easy and fun to read, and are interesting enough to make you a fan of classic literature.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

I know, I know. You're probably tired of hearing everyone talk about this book. But let me say this: it's worth a read! It follows the story of Elizabeth Bennet, the second oldest of five sisters, who belong to a middle class family. Their mother's biggest ideal of earthly bliss is to have her daughters married off to rich families. The story begins as Mr. Bingley, a man of money and background arrives at Netherfield, and falls for the eldest Miss Bennet. With him, comes his rude, arrogant and expressionless friend Darcy. Thus begins a love story which none of these y/a contemporaries can compete with.

Anne of Green Gables by LM Montgomery

Anne of Green Gables is a middle grade classic following the story of an orphan Anne Shirley, who unexpectedly ends up in the house of siblings Mathew and Marilla in Avonlea.

Emma by Jane Austen

Emma Woodhouse, handsome, clever and rich, with a comfortable home and happy disposition seemed to unite some of the best blessings of existence and had lived nearly twenty-one years in the world with very little to distress or vex her.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

Jane has had a difficult childhood. After years of struggle and abuse, she takes the job as a governess at the house of Mr. Rochester. As Jane starts to bond with the owner of the house, she learns a dark secret about him which no one saw coming.

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

A man becomes obsessed with vengeance when his soul mate marries another man. Heathcliff is Cathy Earnshaw's foster brother; more than that, he is her other half. When forces within and without tear them apart, Heathcliff wreaks vengeance on those he holds responsible, even into a second generation.
